Kidney donation and mental health
If you have expressed an interest in donating a kidney to someone you don't know, you will be required to have a psychological assessment with a mental health professional.
If you are thinking about donating to a relative or other close contact, you may also be asked to meet with a mental health professional, particularly if you have a history of mental health issues.
This is to ensure that the emotional impact of donation is not likely to be harmful to you.
Could alcohol or drug use prevent kidney donation?
It is important to discuss with your living donor team your current and past use of recreational drugs and alcohol. This will not necessarily prevent you from becoming a living donor, but will be taken into account during your assessment.
